![]() This minelayer was built as a dual-purpose ship. For this, the Royal Netherlands Navy built a number of classes, starting with the Hydra-class, followed by the Douwe Auke-class and Nautilus. Defensive minefields played an important part in this defensive strategy. The naval strategy was centered around defence of essential ports, estuaries and coastal areas. With every stop, I became a bigger and bigger fan of the National Parks system. The military strategy of the Netherlands primarily focused on operations on land, and the role of the Royal Netherlands Navy was limited to defence of coastal waters. Since 2012, I have collected dozens of passport stamps from various stops in the National Park Service system. There are over 400 locations in the United States and American owned islands. These locations include parks, monuments, battlefields, historic sites, lakeshores, seashores, recreation areas, scenic rivers and trails, and even the White House. It was the perfect memento of his travels and I knew I had to start my own passport book. (Full disclosure: Uncle Bob is a good storyteller and he does have a TON of travel experience.) His National Parks Passport book was filled with stamps dating back to the early 1970s. ![]() ![]() Uncle Bob pulled out a worn, tattered, small blue spiral book and about an hour went by before I spoke again. I knew of the National Park Service system, but didn’t know much information about the various locations. Sharing my itinerary with my Uncle Bob, he asked if I planned on visiting any National Parks. My children were toddlers and we were planning on traveling almost cross country to visit good friends who were temporarily relocated to Albuquerque, New Mexico. Seven years ago I planned my first major road trip. Be sure to look up as you walk under the Ohio (the largest class of submarine) hull ring and the Holland (the first submarine class) hull ring. The outdoor exhibits, including the “ 42 for Freedom” which lists the first group of ballistic nuclear submarines, and the NR41 aka “The Little Sub that Could”, the smallest nuclear powered submarine ever built, which was in service from 1969 until 2008. My Family’s Five Favorite Parts of the Base:ġ. There are picnic areas outside no food or large backpacks are allowed inside the museum or on the Nautilus. Visitors need to be able to climb VERY steep staircases climb up, in, and through tight openings and be comfortable with hallways that can only fit one person at a time and are no more than six feet tall. Strollers are not allowed, there is no handicap accessibility, and it’s tight down below- after all, it is a submarine. The HS Nautilus is not as (younger) child or handicap friendly as the museum. ![]() There is a 80 person auditorium which shows a 50 minute film on a loop. The library is closed to the public because it still has classified information. Make sure children pick up a scavenger hunt from the docent desk. Aside from the open staircase, children should be safe exploring freely, with several hands on exhibits. The exhibits inside the museum are fun for even younger children. Strollers are allowed in the museum, and restrooms are located near the entrance.Īccess to the HS Nautilus is through the museum, and you exit the complex through a gift shop. The museum is two floors and does have an elevator. I would plan on about 90 minutes to two hours to explore (30 hour inside the Nautilus, one hour inside the museum, and some time to explore the outside exhibits).Īdmission is free, although donations are gladly accepted. While the actual Naval Submarine Base in New London is closed to the public, keep driving past the base until you hit the waterfront: On the left is the library, museum, and gift shop straight ahead is the HS Nautilus and to the right is the parking lot and various memorials. When I mention I live in Connecticut, many people will exclaim “Oh you must know a lot of maritime and submarine history having the sub base nearby.” I’ve driven by Groton for the past 38 years and yet, until recently, I had not visited the area, known as the “Submarine Capital of the World.” On a spring break trip to nearby Mystic, Connecticut we stopped for the morning in Groton to finally explore the Submarine Force Museum, and tour the HS Nautilus. ![]() ![]() ![]() If you’re aiming to make it big in Hollywood (as a screenwriter), then you can’t get anything better than this. Whereas I can’t say the same for its iOS version. The Mac and Windows version is priced at $299, whereas the iOS app costs $9.99.īut there’s an extra benefit with Mac and Windows version as they come with 30-day “no strings attached” trial period. Final Draft Pricing Plansįinal Draft is the most expensive product in this test and considering their target audience (professional and budding screenplay writers), it’s no surprise. And I would suggest using that instead of using the typical email form for any query. However, their online chat support is right up to the mark. It claims to reply within two business days, but it’s been more than 48 hours, and I’m yet to receive any response. #2 Final Draft needs to work on the tempo of their email support. On its website, it says the “Night Mode” helps you eliminate distraction, but when I cross-checked with the support team, they denied any such claims. #1 Unlike Scrivener, I couldn’t find a way to clog up online interruptions. #7 Final Draft provides you the option to backup your work in a safer place without making any effort manually. If you want to run the software on more devices, then make sure you’ve uninstalled it from current devices. However, you are bind to install it only on two machines at a time with a single user license. You can use it on Mac, Windows, as well as on the iOS platform. #6 Except Android, there’s no device limitation with Final Draft. But there’s no docx and epub export available which according to me is a major minus point. #4 It has a revision mode that allows you to lock the older versions sheets and use it whenever you want. #3 Final Draft enables the users to collaborate with their writing partners in real-time no matter where they are located.īoth, you and your friend can work on the same project simultaneously and share ideas in real-time. ![]() #2 It offers a feature called “Beat Board” that works as a virtual corkboard where you can dump your ideas or research materials. #1 With a total of more than 300 templates ranging from screenplay, storytelling, to graphic novel and more, Final Draft offers the broadest range of templates. Do I recommend Final Draft? Final Draft Pros ![]() ![]() ![]() Enhance Details needs a lot of computing power (30-40 sec on a reasonably fast 2016 MacBook Pro), so those of youse with older machines might need to go out for lunch while batch processing the results of your latest photo-shoot … -) 2. Finally Adobe seems to have listened to us Fuji photographers, the results achievable with the “Enhance Details” feature are impressive! There’s only two caveats: 1. And you can now see the branches in the upper left quadrant (directly below the words “Enhance Details” -)! For my workflow this means I can process my ACROS JPEG’s as usual and apply Enhance Details with subsequent RAW development of the DNG file for those images earmarked for big enlargement / fine-art printing. In my opinion this is far better than the previous examples, the bridge railing and the foliage have a more natural look. So, when Adobe released their new “Enhance Details” feature end February this I was naturally intrigued & curious if it would do better with X-Trans images! See below the result, straight outta Lightroom, using Enhance Details (this creates a DNG in the same catalogue as a new “digital negative” which can be further processed in Lightroom just like a RAW file): Using Lightroom and Capture One in parallel means that I also need to maintain 2 separate catalogues and processed image folders on my MacBook Pro. But I gotta say I’m not completely happy with Capture One’s user interface - maybe that’s because I mainly use Fuji’s in-camera converted JPEGs (for around 90% of my work) and am therefore used to Lightroom’s interface & workflow. To be fair I’ve happily been using Capture One for a while now as my preferred “heavy duty” solution for large printing (A3+ & larger). 20x30 inch / A1 size enlargement you can start to actually see the “worms”:įrom my point of view it’s better - the vertical rods of the railing are now barely visible and you can see a hint of the branches in the upper left quadrant, but the it does look somewhat harsh now (also here I used my preferred settings but left out the grain to be comparable to the other images). When you enlarge the below in-camera converted JPEG to a magnification corresponding to an approx. ![]() Now here’s the thing: I think that Fuji’s proprietary CFA layout is not even fully managed by their own in-camera demosaicing algorithm (albeit becoming visible only at more extreme magnifications). Demosaicing software optimized for the Bayer CFA layout (as used in Adobe’s Camera RAW converter at the heart of Lightroom & Photoshop CC) can cause trouble when applied to the X-Trans CFA layout, especially with small repetitive patterns, like foliage & brick structures Fuji has implemented a different arrangement of color filters, repeating an alternating 3 by 3 pixel pattern of 5 green, 2 red and 2 blue filters, they call “ X-Trans” (the “X” referring to the X-formed arrangement of the green photo sites)įuji claims this “X-Trans” arrangement delivers a more “film-like” rendering due to the less regular pattern and better performance than the Bayer arrangement, especially improving the micro-contrast due to the higher percentage of green pixels (55% vs. Hang on, ALL makers of digital cameras? No. Obviously the demosaicing algorithm needs to match the arrangement of the color filters, otherwize you will not get the image you saw thru the viewfinder …Īll makers of digital cameras use a so-called “ Bayer” color filter arrangement (repeating a 2 by 2 pixel pattern of 2 green, 1 red and 1 blue filters). ![]() This reconstructing of the full color information from the individual pixels is called “ Demosaicing”. To allow the camera to see the world in color the sensor is overlaid by a color filter array (CFA) of red, green and blue color filters in a distinctive repetitive arrangement, allowing the camera software to recompile the light levels into color information. ![]() Simply put digital sensors are comprised of millions of photo sites (“pixels”) which measure the amount of light (number of photons) hitting them. Adobe seems to have gotten their act together!? Finally … So, you may not need to get a divorce & ditch that subscription after all (they probably ain’t gonna let no-one escape anyway … -) Anyways, at the end of the day Photoshop and Lightroom are still the global standard when it comes down to pro digital asset management & post processingīut before discussing the cure let’s first understand the problem (for those of youse new to Fuji or contemplating joining the Fuji family). ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() There are also some seriously old-school suspension techniques used in the same way one might light a candle during a romantic dinner.
